My Experience of Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival

Preparation

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Before the festival, my family and I would clean the house and stick colorful pictures of animals, flowers, and other decorations on the doors and windows. We would also prepare zongzi, a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. Making zongzi is a complicated process, but it's a fun activity that brings family members together.

Dragon Boat Racing

The most exciting part of the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat racing. In my hometown, people would gather at the riverbank to watch the competition. The dragon boats are long and narrow, and each boat is decorated with a dragon's head and tail. The paddlers sit in rows and paddle in unison to the beat of a drum. The race is intense and competitive, and spectators cheer loudly for their favorite teams. I remember participating in a children's dragon boat race when I was younger, and it was an unforgettable experience.

Legend of Qu Yuan

The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival dates back to over 2,000 years ago. According to legend, Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and politician, drowned himself in a river in protest of the corrupt government. The local people who loved and respected him raced out in their boats to try to save him. They banged their drums and splashed their paddles in the water to prevent the evil spirits and fish from consuming Qu Yuan's body. It's said that zongzi was thrown into the river to feed the fish so that they wouldn't eat Qu Yuan's body. Today, people still eat zongzi and participate in dragon boat races to commemorate Qu Yuan's selfless spirit and show their love for their country. In conclusion, the Dragon Boat Festival is not only a traditional Chinese holiday but also a symbol of patriotism, unity, and respect for history and culture. I'm proud to be a part of this festival, and I hope to celebrate it with my family and friends every year.
